When you read about hemp, you will often encounter the scientific name:

Cannabis sativa L.

But what exactly does that name mean?

Understanding the scientific name of the plant—and the diversity found within cannabis—is an important foundation for learning about hemp genetics, cultivation and breeding.

Let’s start with the basics.

What Does Cannabis sativa L. Mean?

Cannabis sativa L. is the botanical name used for the cannabis species.

The “L.” refers to Carl Linnaeus, the Swedish botanist who formally described and named the species in the 18th century.

Scientific names help researchers, farmers and plant breeders communicate clearly about plants regardless of the common names used in different places.

The first word identifies the genus:

Cannabis

The second identifies the species:

sativa

And the L. recognizes Linnaeus as the botanical authority associated with the name.

One Plant With Tremendous Diversity

One of the fascinating things about cannabis is the tremendous diversity found within the plant.

Over generations, cannabis has been selected and bred for many different purposes.

Those purposes include:

* Fiber
* Grain
* Seed
* Cannabinoid production
* Research
* Plant breeding
* Genetic preservation

As people selected plants with desirable characteristics and reproduced them, different populations developed traits suited to particular purposes and environments.

That is why two plants belonging to Cannabis sativa L. can look and perform very differently.

Understanding Plant Characteristics

Cannabis varieties can differ in many observable characteristics.

These may include:

* Plant height
* Branching structure
* Leaf characteristics
* Growth rate
* Flowering time
* Flower structure
* Seed production
* Fiber characteristics
* Cannabinoid profile
* Terpene profile
* Maturity
* Adaptation to different environments

These observable characteristics are often referred to as a plant’s phenotype.

The phenotype we see is influenced by both the plant’s genetics and the environment in which it grows.

Genotype and Phenotype

These two terms are important when learning about plant genetics.

Genotype

A plant’s genotype refers to its genetic makeup—the genetic information inherited from its parents.

Think of genotype as the plant’s genetic blueprint.

Phenotype

A plant’s phenotype refers to the characteristics that are expressed and can be observed or measured.

For example:

Two seeds may share similar genetics, but if they are grown under different environmental conditions, the plants may not develop exactly the same way.

This gives us an important concept:

Genetics provides the potential. Environment helps influence how that potential is expressed.

Male and Female Plants

Cannabis is especially interesting because many populations naturally produce separate male and female plants, although sex expression can be more complex depending on genetics and environmental conditions.

Male plants

Male plants typically produce pollen.

That pollen carries genetic material that can fertilize female flowers.

Female plants

Female plants produce flowers containing ovules. After successful pollination and fertilization, seeds can develop.

Each seed receives genetic material from both parents.

That is the beginning of another generation.

For breeders and people interested in genetic preservation, parent selection can therefore have a major influence on future generations.

What Is a Cannabis Variety?

You will often hear words such as:

variety, cultivar, strain, line, genetics and phenotype.

These terms are sometimes used interchangeably in everyday conversation, although they do not always mean exactly the same thing scientifically or horticulturally.

A cultivated population may be selected for particular characteristics such as:

* Growth habit
* Maturity
* Seed production
* Fiber quality
* Cannabinoid profile
* Aroma
* Color
* Environmental adaptation

Through repeated selection and breeding, desirable characteristics may become more predictable within a population.

Where Does Hemp Fit In?

This is where our previous lesson becomes important.

Hemp is cannabis.

Under current U.S. federal law, hemp is defined using Cannabis sativa L. and its parts, along with a legal delta-9 THC concentration threshold.

That means the word hemp does not describe an entirely separate botanical species from cannabis.

It is a legal and agricultural classification applied to cannabis that meets the applicable definition.

This distinction is one of the most important concepts for beginners to understand.

Why Genetics Matter

Every generation represents a combination of genetic information.

Plant breeders can select parents because they express characteristics they want to study, preserve or potentially strengthen in future generations.

Over time, selection can help develop populations suited for particular purposes.

This is why preservation matters.

Once unique genetics disappear, recovering the exact genetic combination may be impossible.

Seeds aren’t simply the beginning of plants.

They can also preserve genetic history.

Cannabis Is More Than One Characteristic

It is easy to reduce cannabis to a discussion about THC or CBD.

But the plant is considerably more complex.

Researchers and breeders can study characteristics involving:

* Plant morphology
* Fiber
* Grain
* Seeds
* Cannabinoids
* Terpenes
* Disease response
* Environmental adaptation
* Maturation
* Reproductive characteristics

Understanding this diversity gives us a much better appreciation of why Cannabis sativa L. has remained an important cultivated plant.

Before someone can truly understand hemp genetics, they need to understand the plant those genetics belong to.
